Old Fourth Ward Turns New

It doesn’t take one very long to see that Old Fourth Ward is a special place where the past is not only very much alive in the present, but has also evolved and redefined itself for the future. Perhaps one of the crowning achievements of Old Fourth Ward’s redevelopment and revitalization efforts is the Ponce City Market, housed in the fully-renovated historic Sears, Roebuck & Co. building at the northeastern tip of the neighborhood. Developed by Jamestown–whose portfolio includes the chic Chelsea Market project in NYC–this new mixed-use facility has a marketplace, Central Food Hall, retail shops, living flats, and office spaces. It sits conveniently on the BeltLine and draws in hungry crowds each day from adjoining neighborhoods, acting as a community hub and a proud landmark of Old Fourth Ward.

Smaller in size but just as big of a role played in Old Fourth Ward’s heritage, places like the Sweet Auburn Curb Market (established in 1923) are a testament to the lasting mark of the neighborhood’s bygone eras. The Sweet Auburn Historic District, where you’ll find the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, is a great example of the neighborhood’s preservation efforts. You wouldn’t have thought just a few years ago that Old Fourth Ward would transform into one of the city’s most exciting redevelopment projects. If you look close enough you’ll see vestiges of the neighborhood’s years of hardship and struggle, though looking around at the revived surroundings today, you could say that the neighborhood is experiencing a renaissance of sorts.

Exploring Old Fourth Ward

Speaking of, the Renaissance Park at Piedmont Ave and Renaissance Parkway and have a dog park for pets and owners to spend afternoons in. Dog and pun lovers alike can also visit the newly-opened Freedom Barkway Dog Park, located right under the Freedom Parkway at the center of Old Fourth Ward. Just south of Ponce City Market, you’ll find the Historic Fourth Ward Park, another significant landmark in the neighborhood with a large skate park.

There’s always something to keep you busy in Old Fourth Ward. At the southern end of the neighborhood, where Edgewood Ave meets Boulevard, you’ll find a lively dining scene with top rated, world-class restaurants and bars. There’s also a thriving scene for small, independent businesses like those on Auburn Ave, so foodies and techies will often be seen hanging around. The Old Fourth Ward is right next to downtown Atlanta and borders MidtownVirginia Highland, Poncey-Highland, and Inman Park, making it an easy commute for those wanting to explore these other neighborhoods and all that they have to offer.
