Decatur: A “Great Neighborhood”

It’s interesting to note that Decatur is historically older than Atlanta and has its fair share of buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. And much like the city’s own distinct character, contemporary buildings compliment historic landmarks quite nicely. Llike Atlanta’s own Ansley Park, Decatur has the honor of being named one of the ten Great Neighbourhoods in America by the American Planning Association, a professional organization that specializes in urban planning in the US, just recently in 2013. Decatur’s welcoming atmosphere is one of the reasons families are choosing to relocate here where single-family homes and townhouses are the norm, although condos can also be found at the center of town close to all the excitement Decatur has to offer.

Although it lies just seven miles northeast from the heart of Georgia’s capital, Decatur has surely carved a name for itself in certain ways. Home to the most exciting and palatable culinary trends, these must-try local restaurants have earned acclaim at local, regional and even national levels. And if you ever wanted to sample local food (as well as some international fare) in your own kitchen for a change, you could always head over to DeKalb Farmers Market any day of the week to pick out some of the freshest, highest-quality items that you’ll ever commit to your dinner plate.

Decatur is perhaps also known as much for its busy year-round schedule as it is for its dining scene. Notable crowd-drawing events like the Decatur Arts Festival in May or the Decatur Book Festival (the largest independent book festival in the US) over the Labor Day weekend help define the community’s unique identity. People from all over Metro Atlanta also find any excuse to stop by the Decatur Craft Beer Festival in October to sample some good local brews. But if beer isn’t your thing then perhaps the Decatur Wine Festival just a month later will quench that specific thirst. Add to that free concerts, beach parties, holiday events and random goings-on around the lively downtown square and you’ll never find a reason good enough to stay in.
